Family-career balance (x-axis) by perceived stress (y-axis) among professional and graduate student anthropologists by binary gender.
We're pleased to announce that the first paper from the "Family and the Field" study is out in open access journal PLoS ONE. This was a collaboration between me, Dr. Michaela Howells of UNCW, and our newly minted HBERG PhD Max Stein. The first set of findings from this massive set of survey data indicates:
  • Most professional and graduate student anthropologists come from households with at least one graduate degree.
  • White men are more likely to become tenured professors, despite larger numbers of women entering anthropology (for decades running, according to recent paper by Trudy Turner and colleagues!).
  • Anthropologists report significant lack of family-career balance and high stress (see figure above) regardless of socioeconomic status or background.
